Description

It's not great, but it's a first step into DSOs and I'm hungry to try again having learned a lot in even just this one attempt. It needs a lot of work, the stars are blown out, the tracking was subpar, NGC 2023 is overexposed as well. The image is grainy from pulling the colors with too little data and overall exposure time. I'm also super new at doing the post-processing part which is why NGC 2023 is overexposed here but was fine in my original stacked image out from DeepSkyStacker. I'm also wondering if my focus was slightly off since it was super cold out and frankly hard to focus-test when I shot this. I'm going to try again very soon with a more serious attempt at polar alignment. I want to see how good I can get with the HEQ5 before I go for an auto-guider solution. Despite not being a dedicated DSO camera, I feel like the 585 performed admirably and was definitely limited by my skill and not the camera. I hope I don't suffer too badly for not going for a cooled camera, but I've seen wonderful shots with normal full-frame DSLRs so, I think I got a ways to go before I feel any limitations.
